HEROIC RESCUE WORK
A COURAGEOUS FOREMAN,
(Received March 12, 11.34 p.m.) ! PARIS, March 12. The explosion projected to the bottom three cages with men which were being lowered, destroying the roofs over the mouths of the pits. Four men arrived at the surface by ladders after passing over the bodies; of men and horses prostrated by the explosion. ' . " . Flame 3 next issued from, the pits. ; Rescuers, including doctors and engineers, descended other shafts arid; rescued three hundred and fifty men' working half a mile from the explosion, and brought them to the surface.; These had *not suffered severely. Later three hundred, iribre or Wfes injured, were brought out. i. The rescuers worked .in relays till night, and made a way six hundred yards from the bottom of the shaft. Two miners were found alive at midnight. The foreman,- after the explor sion, told them to lie down, and they escaped the first gust of poisonous au-i They were prisoners for ejght hours.
