THE CLARENCE VALLEY EXPEDITION.
GOVERNMENT PARTY SETS OUT, The majority of the members of theGovernment party which is to explore th*» Clarence Valley left by the train for Seddon this morning. This detachment includes Messrs Trent (Commissioner of Crown Lands), Buckhurst (Crown Lands Ranger), D. Gillies (District Surveyor), and Fraser (Agricultural Department). The guide is Mr Elvy, who accompanied Mr Buckridge when the topographical survey of the country was made, and who knows every inch of the ground, so to speak. There are also attendants and a cook: Mr G. Renner, member of the Land Board,-wired from Pahiatua that he would not be able to attend. Neither could Mr Kirk be spared from the Biological Department or Mr Williams (District ,Road Engineei'). It is roniarked, however, that there is sufficient talent among the party both to do justice to the soil of the Valley and to estimate the cost of roading and bridging required for the development of the Vaiiey. . A large quantity of stores has been taken, and the party expect to be away for three weeks. Mr Walter Gibson, of Kaikoura, and a party of four are to join the Blenheim contingent at Kekerangu to-day. The route will be from Culverden to Lee Whare, thence to Bluff Station, Quail Flat, after which it will be arranged whether the party will divide, one to go by Lake Macßae and Dillon River, and the other by the Clarence River, to the Accommodation House at Acheron River.
