The grand arapery display given by Mr R. Allan at his establishment in Alfred Street last evening attracted a large crowd of spectators. The.tuneful and spirited music rendered by the Garrison Band was an additional attraction.

The monthly meeting of the Lower Wairau lUver Board was attended on Wednesday night by all the members, Mr A. McKay being in the chair. It was resolved to ask the Railway Department and Mr Lane', on whose properties, opposite Griffin's new wharf, overhanging willows were standing, to remove the same. Mr J. White Wrote threatening Supreme Court action if the Board did not specify his position re river bank on his property. . The Chairman said Mr White would be satisfied if the Board waived its right to take soil off the property. A subcommittee was appointed to deal with the matter. In reply to a letter from the masters of the river steamers asking whether any arrangement had been made for the opening of the new channel at the,. Wairau Bar, it was resolved that they be informed the Board has the matter in view. Mr Huddlestpn wrote regarding the unsafey of various banks at Springlands. On the motion of Mr Carr, it was resolved that the Inspector report, at next meeting, as to the- necessity of extending Tindill's bank, and the cost of same. It was then resolved that the gravel on.the section bought by the Board from Mr Purkiss be carted away, also that the. Presbyterian Church trustees be asked if they were willing that the soil at the back of the. church be carted away. On the motion of Mr Hale, it was then resolved that the Borough Council be asked to extend the waterways under the School and Clouston's bridges, and to make a waterway through the High Street bridge approach. The Inspector reported that the boat-shed would need removing before any more soil could be taken from the bank there! It was decided to ask the* Rowing Club for a statement of their wishes in writing, also what arrangements had been come to with Messrs Levin and Co. In regard to Casey's Ditch, the Chairman reported upon the Board's inspection, and the Inspector was instructed to interview Mr Dodson and arrange for the clearing of the ditch at once, the Omaka lload Board to be asked to contribute half the cost. Mr Combes was thanked for a report upon the subject. The lease of the northern bank of the Opawa Relief Channel to Messrs Cameron and McCall for £20 per annum was agreed to. Accounts for £218 were passed for payment.

The local secretary for Trinity College, London., has received word that, beginning with this year's examination, a. gold medal, to be styled the "Plunket". medal, will be annually presented by His Excellency the Governor, Vice-President pf the College, to the candidate selected by the visiting examiner as the best in the Colony. The award'will be confined to local centre candidates, those from enrolled institutions not , participating. '
