A Hokitika telegram says that the ironmongers, Johnston and Company, have received a circular from their New York agents which is of general interest, as showing the effect of the New Zealand preferential tariff. The report says:—" The price of wire nails unchanged, except on wire nails for New Zealand, which gives a preferential tariff on these. To moot the Canadian competition, which was entering the market, in spite of the higher first cost, the price for Now Zealand only is reduced, as an experiment, twelve cents from October 12. This will be observed as the result of the legislation in New Zealand. The foieign manufacturers carry a part of the burden, and New Zealand is thus supplied with a lower price than any other part of the world.
