THE AMERICA CUP.

THE PROGRESS OF THE RACE. Press Association Electric Telegraph. Copyright. Auckland, August 24. The New Zealand Yacht Squadron received the following messages via the Pacific cable :— New York, August 22. 7.43 a.m. and 8 a.m.—Wind steadily southwest—l 3 miles an hour. Later—Wind increased 18 miles an hour. B.2s—Wind is softening. Shamrock has set a larger topsail. The Shamrock crossed the line at 11.45, and the Reliance at 11.46—official time. 12.12—The Shamrock appears to be leading, but the Reliance is slowly pulling up. 12.20—Boats now on even terms, both sailing fast; in the first half hour had apparently travelled nearly five miles. 12.30 - Shamrock in windward position nearest the mark ; Reliance still on the starboard tack. Shamrock changed to port at 12.30. 12.46 Reliance is gradually pulling up to windward of the Shamrock, cutting off the latter's wind. 12 56 Shamrock just.tacked to starboard right under bows of the Reliance. The race between the two boats is very close. 1.6 The Reliance has tacked to port, heading inshore. The Shamrock remained on the starboard tack until a trifle to windward of the Reliance's wake, when she also went about. 1.25 It looks from the highland as if the Reliance was leading by about three eights of a mile. 1.30 The Reliance is leading by nearly half a mile, an eighth of a mile to the windward. It looks as though on this tack she will make the turning mark. Both boats have set baby jib top sails. ' 2.l3—The boats have turned about four miles off the distance to the finish. The Reliance, leading by about a mile, apparently has the race well in hand. 2.2o—The Reliance has a lead of five minutes. Barring accidents she wins by time lead of from six to eight minutes. 2 30—The result is still uncertain. It looks as if the Shamrock has a fighting chance about five miles to the finish. The Reliance is about a mile and a-half ahead, but the Shamrock is gaining slowly. Final—The Reliance has won. The result was transmitted from Montreal to Auckland in 2 tninnteß, via the Pacific.
