CARDINAL VAUGHAN.

Obituary-Cardinal Vaughan. reis Eminence Cardinal Herbert Vamgban, Roman Archbishop of Westminster, and successor of Cardinal Manning as head of the Roman Catholic Church in England, was born at Gloucester on April 15th, 1832. He was the eldest son of the late Lieut.Colonel Vaughan, of Herefordshire. Educated at Stonyhurst College and ia Belgium. Abandoning his first intention to enter the army, he subse quantly went to Reme, where he studied for some time with the future Cardinal Manning. Ordained priest at Lucca in 1854, he shortly afterwards ireturned to England, joining the Oblates of St. Charles (a congregation of secular priests founded by Cardinal Manning at Bayswater) and being sent to St. Edmund's College, near Ware, of which he was vice President till 1862. Having resolved to found a Missionary College, he went in 1863 to America to gather funds ; and in 1869 laid the first stone of the present Mill Hill College, neap London, which institution has now a large number of students. Appointed Bishop of Salford 1872; on the recommendation of the Propaganda was elected by the Pope to the See of Westminster in 1892 ; and was made a member of Sacred College of Cardinals in 1893.]
