Mr Webster, Town Clerk an Devonport, was fined Is and £3 8s costs at the Police Court for irregularities in the recent council election for Devonport. Ho allowed a room with two entrances to be used for polling, and appointed deputy returning officers when it was hi 3 duty, there being only one booth, to pro3ide himself. Thames, May 23.
A fire early this morning totally destroyed a dwelling of six rooms. Before the inmates were aroused the firo had a good hold, and they escaped with some difficulty. The owner (Cotter) was absent at the time- The Brigade, alter hard work, managed to save adjoining houses. Tho estimated damage to the house and furniture is £400. There is a small insurance, which ia not yet known. Local bodies aro combining with the object of inducing the Government to set apart a portion of land ia the Piako swamp, when drained, for selec tion by residents of the goldfields district. The movement is warmly supported, aud the Government has already been requisitioned on the matter.
