Auckland, March 2.

Thomas J. Townson, a Duneiin youth, was charged with attempting suicide. He returned from a picnio in a drunken condition, and attempted to cut bis throat with a pocket-knife. His solicitor said he had been drinking to excess and had lost his situation* The wound is not serious. The Bench bound accused over in his own recognisances, £25.

Wanganui, March 2. James Daley shot himself at Denlair, near Fordell, this morning.

Gisborkb, March 2. Miss Alice Red ward, a muck esteemed lady of Gisborne, aged 21, died at the hospital to night' from the effects of a bicycle accident. She was riding along Main Street, and in trying to avoid a horse she lest control of the bicycle and fell heavily on her head* She sustained severe concussion, not regaining consciousness. No blame is attributed to the horseman.

Inveroargill, March 2. At an inquest on the body of Henry Smith, engine driver, who was killed in a flaxmill at Waimahake, it was shown that, loosely clothed, he was shifting the belt on a pully when the shaft key caught his clothing and he was whirled round, his feet striking tho joist with such force as to displace it. He was thrown from the shaft stripped to the socks, and died soon after. A verdict of accidental death was returned. He had been warned against loose clothing.
