ROMAN CATHOLIC OBSERVANCES.

Amidst the universal regret for the King's serious illness, no members of His Majesty's subjects have received the sad news with greater sorrow and sympathy than the Roman Catholic body. Some years ago when, as Prince of Wales His Majesty's life was despaired of, fervent prayers were ordered and generously offered for his speedy recovery. On receiving the news of His Majesty's critical position by yesterday's cables, His Grace Archbishop Redwood immediately ordered masses and prayers to be offered in all the Wellington churches, that the great King of Kings, in whose hands are life and death, might preserve the life of our beloved sovereign, Edward VII. Accordingly the solemn mass of thanksgiving and the jubilant Te Deuin are to be replaced by masses and prayers for the King's speedy recovery.
