The natives yesterday signalised the conclusion of the period of mourning for Queen Victoria by one of the most impressive gatherings ever held here. Five thousand natives participated in the ceremonies, which have not been witnessed since the casting off of mourning for the late chief Thakombau. The head chiefs from all parts of the Islands have presented the Governor with £1700, collected among, the natives for the Victoria memorial in Fiji, for which over £3000 is in hand. June 25. The tree-planting function at Victoria Park, Suva, the Warden presiding, was a splendid success. Six hundred Wesleyan students were present, and the choral singing in the Government Domain was excellent and creditable (o the teachers. The Administrator presided. The Coronation Stakes was won by the New Zealand horse Goetzor.
