London, April 1. Obituary.—Sir John Stainer, the eminent musician, aged 61.

[Sir John Stainer, M.A., mus. doc, D.C.L., was the son of a schoolmaster in Sotuhwark, and a chorister between 1847 and 185 G. At the age of 16 lie became organist at St. Michael's College, Tenbury ; and three years afterwards was made organist of Magdalen College, Oxford. Graduating in the arts as well as in music, he rapidly obtained high degrees and many important appointments. For some time he was organist of St. Paul's Cathedral. He has composed a large number of anthems, church services, cantatas, etc., as well as songs of a secular character.]
