THE TONGA ISLANDS.
♦ QUESTION OF BRITISH PROTECTORATE. FCRHED PBKBS ASSOCIATION.] Received June 12, 10 a.m. Sydney, June 12. Mr Basil Thomson, interviewed with reference to the declaration of a British protectorate over Tonga, said the natives so far from objecting were quite satisfied to enter into a treaty which simply serves to keep any other nation but Britain out of the territory, and secured them their land and other property under their own local Government. The Imperial Government had no desire to administer the Government of such a petty cluster of islands, but wanted a coaling station m the vicinity.
