At the wool sales, a small parcel of superfine combings sold at Is s£d. At Mark Twain's first lecture, the celebrated humorist had a splendid reception, the house being full to overflowing. The weather is cold and wintry, and more rain is threatening. Good showers fell m Sydney and over a large area of the country yesterday. News has been received from Noumea of severe drought, as a consequence of which there is some distress m New Caledonia. There is great scarcity of grass, and cattle are dying m hundreds. Melbourne, September 19. Harvester has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. At the annual meeting of the Melbourne Permanent Building Society, the directors' report showed the nat profits had been hardly sufficient to meet the reduced rate of interest under the amended scheme. The society had earned 2srd per cent on current debenturps. During the year, debentures to the value of £34,630 had been taken m exchange for properties standing m the books of the society at £34, 1 20. From the present condition of the real estate market, the directors say they are convinced this is the only way to clear off the liabilities to debenture holders.
