AN EXCITING EVENT.

SMART ARREST OP WELLINGTON BURGLARS. [UNITED FBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, July 24. The arrest of Potter and Clements on Saturday for burglary at the suburban hotels was very clever. Potter and Clements first entered the Whit 9 Horse Hotel at Ngahauranga at 2 a.m., but being surprised got clear, having made retreat safe by unlocking the doors to the street before making the raid. Mr Waddington, the landlord, at once telephoned to town, and Detectives Herbert and Gantley set out for the village, whioh is three miles distant. At Kaiwarra, a mile out, they met Waddington, who had lost sight of the burglars. The trio set out for Ngahauranga, but noticing a light m the Rainbow Hotel at Kaiwarra, the detectives crept up quietly to the hotel, and peeping through the windows saw Potter and. Clements hard at work inside charing tha shelves of liquors and cigars. The burglars soon came out, and Jba detectives attempted to arrest them, but it was no easy matter, as the acoused fought hard, and a desperate struggle resulted. Potter vainly endeavored to use his jemmy, and at one time Gantley was nearly choked, but eventually the handcuffs were got oa the men, and they were conveyed to town.
