THE FISHERIES' QUESTION.

LEGISLATION IN NEWFOUNDLAND,

[united pbess association.]

St. Johns, May 23,

Both houses of Parliament have approved of the measure enforcing the modus Vivendi with France m connection with the fisheries, which was introduced at the suggestion of Sir Wm. Whiteway and other delegates, who appeared at the bar of the British House of Lords to protest against Lord Knutsford's bill. In moving the second reading of his bill at the end of last month Lord Knutsford promised that the Government would not proceed with it m the House of Commons, provided that the Newfoundland Parliament passed a similar measure. On hearing the statement Sir Wm. Whiteway cabled from London to his colleagues at St. Johns to immediately introduce an equivalent measure, with the above result. The operation of the bill, however, is restricted to the present year.
