TRIBUTE TO THE EMPEROR.
PREPARATIONS FO!t GRAND MILITABY OT3SBQUIES, DEiiLis, April 26. The remains of Von Moltke are lying m state, and will be buriel on Tuesday. The Emperor visited the mortuary chamber, and publicly stated Von Rloltke's loss was graiiter than the loss of an army. He has summoned all Princes anil Kings of Germany to attend the funeral _•; • Moltkb, FiEtiD-MAKSiuri Hsljiotii Cabd Bernhatid, Count Von, was b. Oct. 26, 1800, at Parchim, m Mecklenburg. He left the Danish service ('22; for that of Prussia, and became one of ths staff ofncorF. In '35 he superintended the Turkish military reforms, and wont through the Syrian rebellion ('39). Ho was m '56 nide-de-camp to Prince Frederick William of Prussia. He was appointed ['64) chief of the staff m the Danish war. In '66, m the AustroPrussian war, his successful tactics as General of Infantry won the battle of Sadowa. On the conclusion of the war the decoration of the Black Eagle was conferred upon him, and he was created General-in-chief of the staff. The successful conduct of the Franco-Prussian war (70-71) was also due, m great measure, to the tactical plans of Count Moltke. . He was made Field-Mai-ghal m '71, Count, '72. For some years Field-MaTshal Von Moltke was assisted by General Waldersee, who succeeded him ('B9) as chief of the General Staff of the German Array. On the retirement of the Count, m Aug. '88, the Emperor William 11. appointed him President of the National Defence Commission, an office held by the first German Emperor when Prince of Prussia, and by the late Emperor Frederick when Crown Prince. On March Bth, '89, theyeteran general celebrated the seventieth aii^i_iirer3ary of his entrance into the army, aM%eoeived presents and congratulations from the sovereigns and the people of all the German States. Von Moltke's claim to rank as ths greatest of modern strategists is undisputed. He is called "Father Moltks" by the German people. His ninetieth birthday was celebrated m '90, and proclaimed a sohool holiday by the Emperor.
