- — — ; — -♦- " PICTON BEGATTA. Despite the unfavorable appearance of the •weather yesterday all of the trains to Picton ■were crowded. We cannot say that the arrangements were altogether, of ihe best, bnt for this the District Manager was not entirely to blame. There is a great scarcity of rolling stock on .this- seetionr aaotr"sgs2 could rnot~M& & tingle track opwagon'aloiigf the line that could Kavs bean sqrieezedinf^ Berdce. The conaeqaence that. many; haS to &>. let i behind at Blenheim anj? ?n-_ termediate 'siatidiss/ some of 3 found their way dowrTiil T6bi«3e3, %wfiile othferß had - to wait. fer.;thtee hours for an extra train. Fortunately for all concerned the rain blew overi and though the water was _at_.first rather lumpy for rowing, towards thVaftercoon it became as calm as a mlil pond.un fact there was not enough wind for the last sailing events. It cannot be said that the proceedings were on the whole exciting, the absence Of visiting crews from 'Wellington and Nelson being much felt, but for this the 'committee are not to be blamed as the prizes -offered were liberal enough to have induced more competition. In the rowing events Picton had it all their own way, Blenheim being out-distanced altogether m the first event; bat on both sides there was a lack of form, the Picton maidens especially proving more notable for strength than skill. The second-class sailing race was postponed until this morning at 10 o'clock, owing to lack of- wind for sailing purposes yesterday afternoon. The amount collected on board the flagship Dhawar amounted to £24 -7s and the Begatta Committee are much indebted to Captain Hypgrave and his officers for their exertions m contributing to ihe success of • the Begatta from a financial point of view; The Blenheim Garrison Band, under Band-master Birch, played selections daring the day m first ciasß- style, and added greatly to the enjoyraeniof those present. -Captain Fisk made a number of trips round Mabel Island with ihe Torea, the Phoenix was also running round the Jiarbour with passengers,' and the new passenger boat intended for the Picton and Wellington trade, the Bowena, made an excursion to the Grove. All present seemed to enjoy the outing very much, and-the hospitality of our Picton neighbours was considerably trenched - upon during the day by their many visitors.
