ATHLETICS.
» THE AWATEBE SPORTS.
A large number of the Blenheim people iodk advantage of the holiday to attend the Awatere spoils yesterday, and had it not been for the inclemency of the weather m the morning, the attendance would have been muoh larger, as the drive to the Awatere is a really pleasant outing. As it was aboat 200 people attended the sports, a large number being of the fair sex. A splendid piece of ground was chosen, with a • . small bill m the background which formed a natural grandstand; large cabbage trees were planted m the ground round the course, and everything possible was done by the the Committee for the convenience of the public. Messrs Benwick and Stirling acted as judges, and their decisions gave general satisfaction. Mr J. Reid the hon. Secretary, was the right man m the right place and. worked with a will to make the affair a success. The events were keenly contested, and the handicapping of Messrs Eeid and Hay was favorably commented on, the finishes being particularly close. Mr Avery had charge of the booth and also provide? a splendid table. Everything was orderly and well conducted, and the sports may nov be looked on as an annual affair.
