[UNITED PBEBS; ABSOOIATION.J OAMABTMUIy 21. John Johnston, for many yearns hotelkeeper at Waitaki South, committed suicide by hanging himself to a beam m his stable this morning. He has been drinking heavily, and was m financial difficulties. m ■ ■ , nn Wellington, July 22. Sergt.-Major Bell died suddenly yesterday afternoon; On his return from his office he stated to his wife he felt m his usual .health, but he laid down on the couch, and subsequently went to bed, •where m a few minutes he expired without uttering a word. For the past eighteen months he -has been suffering from diabetes. Deceased served ten years m India m the 2nd. battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and was through the India mutiny 1857, the Ashantee War 1873-74 ; he was afterwards stationed m various parts of Ireland, and sixteen years ago was sent out to New Zealand by the Home r Government as drill instraotor, which he fulfilled up to the time of his death. He will have a military funeral. .
