THE NEW DEFENCE SCHEME
[UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WeliLing toN ' J Q 'y 22> The New Zealand Times publishes some details of the new defence scheme. Practically there will be no increase of the permanent force with the exception of a few torpedo men. B is proposed to appoint an Imperial Omcer at each of the four principal ports where a partially Daid system is to be adopted with regard to the volunteers. About 3000 men will be wanted, and if enough volunteers are not procurable power will be asked to draft a certain number of militia. Each man trill be able to earn from £.5 to £6 per year. Country corps are to be abolished, but those which like may become rifle clubs by attending for four parades per year. The total extra cost is estimated at £20,000.
