THE GOVERNMENT VICTORY.
* It look 3 like being wise after the event perhaps, but really m this case we must say the expected and not the unexpected has happened. We have several times pointed out that the Government were strong m their honest endeavors, ond m their prudent policy; and honesty and prudence weigh m the scale against a great many fine qualities, and when it comes to a division, even Members of Parliament have a conscience. The impeachment of the Government by Mr Ballance was doubtless an able and exhaustive one, but after all it contained do charges of magnitude. It dealt almost entirely on alleged faults of omission, and disclosed no important sins of commission. In answering it therefore the Government had really do direct charges to meet, but to explain why they didn't do this, that or the other. We do not for a moment say a no-confidence motion should not have been tabled at all, but the time was inopportune, and the Opposition have clearly lost a great deal of ground through their precipitancy.
