GLADSTONE TO INTERVIEW POPE AND KING.
REV. C. H. SPURGEON. A UNIONIST ORGAN. INCREASE OF THE FRENCH NAVY. SUPPOSED DEATH OF AERONAUTS. (united peess association.) Rome, Jan. 18. Mr Gladstone, who is spending the winter m Italy, has requested audiences with His Holiness the Pope and King Humbert. London, Jan. 18. The Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, who was severely injured recently by falling down stairs, is recovering. It is reported that the Marquis of Hartington has purchased the " Manchester Examiner and Times " and that the papers will be used as the mouth-piece oi the Union Party. In the wreck of the steamer Puani last week, Mr Sydney, Holder of Adelaide, was drowned. Pabis, Jan. 18. The French Government are increasing the Navy by the addition of four Ironclads. Antwerp, Jan. 18. On Tuesday last two aeronauts ascended m a balloon with the intention of making the passage to England. Since then nothing has been heard of them, and it is fancied that the balloon has fallen into the water and the aeronauts been drowned.
