COLONIAL MEAT. A SEBIOUS COLLIEEY EXPLOSION. THE NATIVE FOOTBALL TEAM. (united press association.) London, Jan.l 9. The Colonial Office are arranging for the purchase of a sternwheel steamer built for the Nile expedition, for use m < the New Guinea rivers. The imports of the Australian lamb exhibits show an increase for 1888 of 21 per cent over that for 1887, and New Zealand of 19 per cent m mutton. There is a general increase of 73 per cent. At Smithfield beef is averaging top prices: Australian mutton 4sd, and New Zealand mutton 4£d. The election for the vacancy for the Govan Division seat, rendered vacant by the death of Sir William Pearce, was taken to-day when Mr Wilson, a Home Ruler, defeated Sir J. Pender by 1071 votes. The elections under the County Councils' Act created very little interest and the returns show that most of the members of the Metropolitan Board of Works were rejected. Sir John Lubbock and Lord Rosebery were at the head of the poll forthe city. Latest information from Eangoon states that the Chinese Government are endeavoring to arrange a compromise with the Thibetans. Otago Qzartz Mining Company with a capital of £100,000 is announced. A serious explosion has taken place m the Hyde colliery at Manchester, and it is reported that 30 persons have been killed. The Native football team met Yorkshire to-day, when they were defeated by live goals and a try to one goal and try. Washington, Jan. 19. The Senate adopted an amendment to the Tariff Bill, providing the payment of a bounty of 1 cent per £ for sugar made from the cane —sorghum cane —grown m the States.
