The Eastern Extension Gable Company's repairing steamer Sherard Osborne, which has been engciged for some time past m repairing the broken cable across Cook's Strait, returned to port this morning, having been successful m restoring complete communication between the North and South Islands. During the operations, however, it was found necessary to borrow from the steamer a certain length of cable m order to replace a portion of the old cable, which was found to be m a Very bad condition ; and the steamer will return m a day or two to recover the borrowed section of the cable, and replace it with the cable which the Government have m store here.
