MR SALA AND THE YORICK CLUB.

(UNITED PKEB3 ASSOCIATION.)

CHRiaTOHOitCH, Oct 27.

Mr Or. A. S^la, writing m reply to a Utter signed "Bohemian," which appeared m the Telegraph, expWins his action m connection with the Yorick Club, Melbourne. He says :— " In the first place, strictly speaking, I have never written to one of the Home papers calling the membets of the Yorick Club, Melbourne, a set of cads. I wrote a private note to Mr Henry Labouchere, M.P., the editor and proprietor of Truth, m which I alluded to the incivility and disgraceful conduct of certain cads connected with; the Yorick Club, Melbourne, m striving to injure me m my lecturing tour through the colonies. Mr Labouchere, by some atrang inadvertence, so ms to have treated my private note as a publio communication, and lam very glad that he has done bo, sinoe I have now an opportunity of publicly vindicating my action with regard to the Yoriok Club. The statement that ' towards the small hours ' I sent the Club a note saying that I was ill and could not attend there at dinner U 3imply a cowardly and calumnious falsehood. Before 11 m the morning of the day m question I wrote to tha Secretary of the Club to a»y that I was suffering from a severo attack of i bronchitis, and would be unable to attend the dinner. Before 12 o'clock the Secretary had an interview with me m my room at Menzies' Hotel, and heard from me m person the expression of my regret that I was unable to come to the dinner. I may just add that for more than 15 years I have been a periodical sufferer from bronchitis and spasmodic asthma. There is not the slightest neoi for ma to dwell m detail on the system of calumny and raisrapresentation to which, at the period of the abortive dinner, I WiS exposed at tha hands of certain cads connected with the Yorick Club, Melbonrne." <
