PUBLIC WORKS AND EDUCATION.
In an article on the finance of the Abolition Bill the New Zealand Herald gives the following : —
Let us now see how the Provinces are dealt with. As to the Land departments, we need only say they are left just as they are at present. Auckland, which has cut hers down to the lowest point, is to have them at the lowest point still. Other Provinces , whose needs m the past have not bewi so great, are to keep their expenditure also at its present point. It is said that this is only for one year, but those who know how closely the expenditure has been watched by people and Councils m all the Provinces, will not calculate on much saving being effected hereafter m these branches by the transfer to Colonial control. The following are figures showing the proposed expenditure from land fund m each Province : — Public Works. Education. Auckland £25,529 ... Nil. Wellington 118,000 ... 10,650 Hawke3Bay 23,000 ... 6,050 Nelson 26,850 ... 10,000 Marlborough 5,500 • ... 2,380 Canterbury 815,221 ... 46,905 Westland 22,282 ... 7,157 Otago 555,000 ... 59,526 These are facts — bare, simple facts — taken from the Estimates, and not admitting of the least doubt or dispute. We shall be told that the General Government had no choice, but to take the Appropriation cts of the Provinces and frame their expenditure upon them until they can better see their way.
