ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAILS VIA SUEZ.

The Gothenburg left Hobson Bay at 5 p.m. on the 20th December, and arrived at the Bluff at 3.45 this morning. Melbourne, Dec. 20.

The Rangatira arrived at Adelaide yesterday. The Rangitoto leaves to-mor-row with mails for Hokitika. London, Nov. 24.

Russia notifies her withdrawal from the Paris treaty neutralising the Black Sea. Prussian complicity is suspected. Lord Granville’s reply was outspoken, firm, and courteous, but condemning the Russian repudiation. Austria, Turkey, and Italy join in remonstrating. A panic

occurred on the Stock Exchange, consols falling 2 per cent. ; Turkish stock fell 5. The English press and nation approve of Lord Granville’s reply. European telegrams indicate a peaceful solution. Orleans is evacuated by the Prussians and occupied by the French. A grand sortie from Paris is expected, in combination with a rear attack by the armios of the Loire and the West.

The Duke of Aosta is elected King of Spain. November 29.

The bombardment of Paris is still delaped. The Prussians having completely cut off supplies, ai’e leaving famine to conquer instead of gunpowder. The Daily News correspondent says Paris was provisioned for six weeks longer, and another account says three months.

The Prussians say Paris already shows signs of surrendering. Meanwhile several small battles have occurred during the month ; and Dijon, Thionville and Verdun have capitulated. The army of the Loire, having assumed the offensive, had several small successes against the Prussians, who, under Prince Charles, 150,000 strong, were manoeuve.ung to surround it. A great battle between them is is imminent at Orleans.

Another French army in Brittany made a successful skirmish at Di’eux on the 17th. Another force met the Prussians near A miens on the 25th, when a battle ensued, and the French were victorious. The Germans, however, rallied, and on the following day recovered their position. The French then evacuated Amiens.

In the south, General Werdur was threatening Lyons, and has defeated the Irregular Corps under Garibaldi. Wool sales are progressing steadily and the opening prices are maintained. Wheat advanced 3s per quarter.

We received the following telegram from our Hokitika correspondent on Tuesday last:—

“ The Rangitoto arrived here at 11 '3O, bringing no additional news. “It is rumored in Melbourne that the Government telegram warns the Colony to expect war between England and Russia.

“ The Hon. Dr. Featherston, Sir Charles Clifford, and Mr John Clifford, were among the passengers per Rangitoto.”
