Flax. —Messrs Dcvitt and Hetfc reports as follows :—New Zealand Flax-—Only 400 bales have been offered at auction since cho 24th ult. the bulk of which found buyers at former rates, viz., W. McL, per Cambodia, at 275, , per Rapido, at £27, 13 (in diamond) at £2S 10s, no mark £25. The best dressed qualities are scarce, and arc nominally worth £32 to £35. Wc think that prices have now touched the lowest point, and we anticipate an improved demand. G, and J. Noble of London, under date 22nd April report as follows There have been only two small public sales since our last report; the few lots sold brought about previous values. Privately there have been some sales made, ranging from -£T9 for the common to £3O per ton for good fairly cleaned fibre. Messrs Miles Brothers and Co., report : Wc regret to say the market continues very depressed, and sales have been made £3 to £4 per ton under last quotations for good qualities ; common and medium selling at about former rates. Wc believe this is entirely in consequence of the report that New Zealand flax will not stand the sea water action, although it is most serviceable for all inland purposes. 3Vc cannot help thinking, at any rate hoping, that a reaction will set in again in its favor ; in fact, we hear that several rope makers have been talking it down as much as possible, while at the same time they have been quietly buying it up. Present prices, say— Common ... £l3 10s. to £lB per ton. Medium ... 20 ~25 Good to fine ... 28 ~ 35 ~ Manilla hemp, which lias been drooping for some time, now shows more firmness, with a rather better demand, and prices are not likely to go lower. * We extract from Messrs. Noble’s, ana Levitt and Hett’s circulars the following, as the prices obtained for New Zealand flax Ex Rapido, 10 bales, £25 ; 18 bales, £2G ; 40 bales, £4G ; 22 bales, £2B 10s ; 17 bales, £25. Tat-r.ow.—The market during the past month has been extremely dull and prices have declined about 6d per cwt. Quotations for P.Y.C. are 44s 6d. on the spot, and for delivered to the end of June, and 45s 3d. per cwt. October to December. Town tallow is in rather bettor supply at 42s Gd., being a decline of Is Gd per cwt. Australian Tallow.—A good demand for this description, but prices have declined Is to Is Gd per cwt. quotations are :—Mutton, fair to good, 42s Gd to 435, mixed melting and beef, fair to good, 42s to 42s 6d per cwt.
