TO THE LOYAL OF MARLBOROUGH. Than s. God I he’s spared, our Alfred lives, ’ True Briton’s sons will cry; To thee, Great God, who ever give* Thy succour from on high, A nation’s tears in grief bedew* The record of the crime; But who shall bear the breaking news To England’s Queen and mine. Murmurings of this direful deed Hath grieved us ever since ; Our condolence we’ll send with speed, To our Young Sailor Prince. Rise; Marlborough’s sons! and shrink no more, Nor think the place too small; Your Queen will look from shore to shore, For sympathy, from all, Marlborough’s sons, —Why stand ye silent ? When your Sovereign’s heart is wrung ; Cherished hopes before her lie rent, i; In the attempt upon her son. Should our sons less loyal be, ' Nor watch, nor vigil keep ; Oh, Marlborough ! ope thy slumbering eyes,— c Arouse, thee from thy sleep. Marlborough I cans’t thou not express ■ Thy indignation strong ; By prayers, thanksgivings, or address,— By word, by deed, or song. Marlborough-! in thine inmost heart. Bright germs of love are found ; Let nothing your good feelings thwart. But loyal love abound. Victoria, hail! in that dear name A magic spell is spread ; In Fatherland, her Queenly fame, Brought blessings on her head. Long live, Victoria ; shout on high. Fair Albion’s loved Queen; Unfurl the banners, let them fly, Beneath the sun’s bright gleam. Let not the fire within your breast, Be smouldering there unseen ; Proclaim your love, from east to west, • For our young Prince and Queen. Like Prarie fire, Oh ! may it spread,— Reach hamlet, hall, and cot; How e’er thou decks thy Hydra head, Treason ! we love thee not. Blenheim, May Ist, 1868. E. R.
