Pryde, secretary of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, in reply to the Council's letter about the non-regard of health regulations, wrote detailing what steps the Board was taking to cope with the epidemic of diphtheria, scarlet fever and other infectious diseases which were prevalent at present,—Received. D. Whytock wrote asking what rental per annum the Council wanted for [Sections 3/4, 5 and 6, Block XV 111., for grazing purposes.-—lt was decided to submit these sections to auction- at au early date. Anderson, M.P., wrote acknowledging ■■ receipt, of .the resolution passed by the Council regarding" the pr.op.6sed! alterations in the train services,/and informing the 'Council that lie had written to tlie Minister for Railways on the .subject and made strong rOpre-, seiitations.—Received. .•' ..* ' The 'Waipara County Council forwarded a circular containing a copy ol j resolutions passed by it urging that everyone with a small area should grow potatoes and other vegetables; larger areas should be sown with wheat or oats; and that a personal canvass i should be made frith a view to secuirng promises to grow food-stuffs.--Received, A petition signed by T. A. Christie and seven others asked for a favorable reconsideration of the application by Young Chung for a billiard saloon license. Petitioners stated that the applicant had been over 30 years iri the town and had conducted billiard saloons in the past to the satisfaction of the police and public. His eyesight: was failing and prevented him following his old trade of cabinetmaking, so it; was hardly just to deprive him of the opportunity of earning his own livelihood-in the only way his age and health would permit.—-After .some . discussion ohe Council decided to adhere to its former decision. •'...' Daniel Duncan wrote notifying the Couneilthat lie was surrendering leasehold Allotments 8 and 9, 'Section 66, Block XVl.—Received. George H. Mann wrote stating that Miss Finlayson, lion, secretary at lnyercargill of the Mission to Lepers, had arranged a lantorn v lecture to be given in the Gore Town Hall on May 23, and asking that, as the mission was -undenominational and humanitarian," would the Council grant the use of the hall free of charge on that; occasion?—lt was decided that the hall be let at the usual rate, less 75 per cent, rebate. Geo. H. Mann wrote informing tlie Council that the representatives of tlie various churchessfhad met as requested and drawn up an order, of service for the celebration of Anzac Day. He enclosed a copy and also a list of recommendations for the Council's approval. —The programme and recommendations were approved. - Applications for the supply of electricity for lighting were received from W- W. Knowles, Railway Esplanade, East Gore, for 5 lamps, and from H. Win die for 9 lamps in liis residence, 'Main Street, North Ward.—Granted: REPORTS. W. C. Moore, meat inspector, reported that during the month of March 75 cattle, 316 sheep, 14 lambs and 9 pigs 'were killed .at the abattoirs, and of this number one cow had been condemned as unfit for food.—Received. The Works Committee made tlie following recommendations :-—(1) Re footbridge, on traffic bridge: That as-; the footbridge, was constructed by . the Southland County Council and half the cost charged to the Borough, the County be asked to make it safe for traffic, the spaces between the planking being dangerous to perambulator wheels, etc. (2)* Re trees at W. Tutty's premises, Avon street: That as the trees appear to be on the boundary of the section leased to Mr Tutty and the Borough section adjoining, the Council agrees to! be responsible for half the work of topping the trees.—Adopte'd. The Finance Committee made the following recommendations:—(l) That the following accounts be passed for payment: Wages, £l2B 13s Id; refund temporary-loan, £126 10s 9d; Interest, £BO4 7s' 6d; monthly accounts, £173 ! 17s Bd;total, £1233 9s. (2) That an account from W. Wilson' for repairs cab and lost time be held over for con- . sideration by the Council.—The first clause was adopted, and after some discussion it was decided regarding the second clause, '"That the Council recognises no liability in the matter." The Lighting Committee, reported regarding street lighting, M.ain South Road, that they had instructed the; electrical engineer to submit an estimate of the cost of shifting the transmission line from Burnby's to the Charlton Road to the eastern side of Majm Street, and the erection. of street lamps on the poles on the west side of the. street.—This report created a de.al of discussion, but ultimately it was resolved that the work be proceeded with. ' : t . GENERAL. John Graham, officer commanding D Company,' 25th Reinforcements, wrote asking for games, etc., to help the men"to pass the time on shipboard, or tor donations of money to • procure same.—lt was decided'.to grant £5. Councillors Rhodes and Wright were appointed to act as representatives of the Council in signing the Borough electoral roll. . The matter of reducing the license fee for having water closets connected with the borough (sanitation system from £2 to £1 was under consideration, but it was eventually decided that the matter be referred to the incoming Sanitary Committee. • -,'-■'. It was decided to again approach the Southland Frozen Meat Company to supply the meter reading for one year at their works at Mataura to enable the Council to gauge the amount of leakage of electric current on the wires.
