A London Press Association cable announces the death of Mr EdmundPayne, actor. The following Duncdin candidates passed the State examination of midwives, held last month:—Mary White, St. 'Helens Hospital (fourth)'; Mary Parlane, Medical SchooLMaternity Hospital (sixth); Edith S. Sun-gen, Annie McLean, and Mary W. Todd. ■ Mr R. JVJ.orris,,the popular captain of the Waikiwi football team, died in the Invereargill Hospital yesterday morning. In the second match of the season, playing against Star, deceased while participating in a scrum got his neck crushed. The accident was a very painful one and Dr Crawford ordered his immediate, removal to< the hospital. After being in that institution for a time he leftj but some Lime afterwards had to return.' It is understood (states the 'Southland Tiroes') that complications set in and that death was not so much the result of the accident as the complications. As a mark of respect i the Hags at Rugby Park were flown at half-mast. Deceased was 29 years of age and was unmarried.

A gathering, of upwards of 60 footballers representative of the various 10-j cal clubs and including a large number, of private citizens, assembled at Latham's Rooms last evening' for the purpose of making a presentation, to Mr E. Biegar prior to his departure to. Balcliitha, to whence he- has received notice- of. transfer from the local branch of the post office. Mr W.|Flnder presided, and in. presenting jVlr Biggar with a travelling rug on behalf of the footballers and a gold-mounted fountain ;pen and nocketbook on behalf of the citizens referred in the highest terms to, the worth 1 of the recipient as a footballer, a public official and as a private citizen. Mr D. L. Poppehvell in "supplementing the chairman's remarks reviewed Mr Biggar's brilliant career as an Eastern District and Southland representative footballer, and expressed the hope that he would receive the necessary permit to complete the present season in the Eastern. District, when he (the speaker) felt asm red that. Mr Biggar would be one of the first forwards selected .to make the trip North with the Southland representatives..
