RADIUM AND COAL.

A possible _ new source of radium is being investigated by two American chemists, Mr Lloyd and Mr Cunningham, and confirmation comes at the same time from two well-known French scientists, M. Monreu and M. Lepape. The new source is coal, and it appears that plants during growth secrete minute quantities of radium, which has ultimately been traced in coal found in Alabama. The amount of radium ie stated to vary with different kinds of coal. The quantity is very email compared with the amount found in the minerals from which radium is at present extracted, but it is claimed that it is possible to extract the radium, though the cost is not stated.
