The 'Lyttelton Times'states that Mr Russell, formerly Mayor of Greymouth, now a settler on the Hatuma estate, is mentioned as a possible Liberal candidate for Waipawa, in oppositioft to the sitting member, Mr George Hunter. Cruickshank, S.M. Mr Hutchison's duties at Invercargill will commence on March 1, and will extend over a; period of 12 months. Misa Smith is an ex-pupil of the Southland Girls' High School, having entered in 1903 with a Junior. Education Board Sheolarship. There 12 applicants for the position. The death occurred at Christchurch i on Saturday afternoon of Colonel W. A. Day, who for many years was closely 1 associated with defence matters in Can- j terbtiry, and for some time commanded 1 the North Canterbury Infantry Bat-1 talion. He was born at Lyttelton in 1861, and was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and at tho King's College School, London. He was for 14 years a member of the Christ's 001-1 lege Rifles, and was elected captain of the corps m 1892. In June, 1897, he was promoted to the Staff, and gazetted i a major, and on August 1,1901, ho was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel jn 6ucces- i sion to tho late Lieutenant-Colonel' Francis. He will bo buried with mili- | tary honors this afternoon. I
