Members of the Excelsior Football Olub recently made a presentation to Mr J. P. Wylie, vice-president, to mark tho occasion of his wedding. The gift consisted of a handsome rose bowl and was handed to tho recipient by tho president (Mr W. F. Inder) who made reference to the great interest Mr Wylie had always taken in the club. The recipient suitably replied. Our late teacher, Mr Lea, having been promoted to the hcadinasterahip of tho Dipton school after a service <tf many years atGarston (writesour Gars, ton correspondent) was presented by the residents with a purse of sovereigns, while Mrs Lea was asked by the ladies of the district to accept of a silvermounted eake-hicket, as a small mark of tho very great esteem in which she was held. Hotli Mr and Mrs l#-ri in their public and private capacities will bo missed, Mrs Lea acted as telephonist in Mr Lea's absence and was also in charge ot the post office, being always courteous and obliging to all. W© all wish them every success in their new home, and hope that their lives may at all times fall in pleasant places. It is with much regret (writes our Uarston correspondent) that J have to record tho death of Air Thomas Muirhead, who passed away at his residence, iVokomai, on Friday evening. The dooeased gentleman was one of our oldest settlers and was greatly resnected. He was for many years a member of the Lake County Council, discharging his duties with a straightforward honesty of purpose and never-failing uprightness. He leaves a grown-up family of tour sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Mr Muirhead arrived ii) Wow Zealand when quite .a young man and 1 m consequence, had to undergo all tho trials nad vicissitudes of the earlv pioneer, which to his credit, be is said, ho overcann ind arrived at a degree of success and comfort not alwav* given to old pioneers.
