ATHLETICS.

CIVIL SERVICE CLUB. ! WELLINGTON, Jan. 28. The sports carnival of the Civil Service Amateur Sports Club was held on Saturday in fine weather. There was a large attendance and' the performances generally were good, Pugh, Cashman, Poole and V. J. Bryce being prominent. Cashman succeeded in getting only second place in the mile walk, his time being 6min 37 l-ssec. Pugh was in a class by himself in distance running and won the three miles event with ease. McKay was announced to attempt to beat the Australasian pole vault record by jumping lift 2in. He cleared the bar with about 5 inches to spare; but it was found on measuring that the bar was only Oft 7in. The mistake was rectified, and he jumped again, but jumped two inches too low, hitting the bar, and did not try again. The wrestling events were well contested.
