Mr Foster (Minister for Trade and Commerce) is making overtures to Australia for the establishment of a trade \ agreement and will ask for reductions in the Australian tariff on the following articles: Agricultural implements, ammunition, boots and shoes, metal manufactures, textiles, apparel, vehicles, bicycles, motors. Mr Ross (Commissioner for Australia) has reported that the Australian Government is preparing to consider a tariff arrangement. Mr Foster is prepared to go as a special representative to Australia to en-. deavor to conclude the agreement. v. v (AVSTRJHJAf* OPINION. Received January 29, 9.40 a.m. ;. MELBOURNE, Jan. 20. Mr A. Fisher (Premier), referring to the Canadian reciprocity cables, said the Commonwealth Government wantfid to meet a Canadian representative to talk over matters. Until they understood one another they could not Aircuss the terms of reciprocity. Mr Tudor (Minister for Customs) stated that he had received no communication from Canada, but'Mr ter's visit would be. welcome fusS would greatly facilitate the preliminaries. Personally he the Commonwealth Government wa* no t likely to grant preference 'to afty article wherein a profitable trade h&d been built up by means of a, tariff. If they could promote trade without injury or with mutual beries;t it would be a splendid thing.
