TIDE OF IMMIGRATION. per ' .-.■■■-; \Txnv WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. The Arawa berthed in Wellington today from London "a full ship" so far as passengers are concerned, no fewer than 446 landing. They were distribueted as follows:—27 in the first class, 75 in the second class and 344 in the third class. The passengers booked to -Wellington totalled 148. } The immigrants were <-!"s<-o'l high by| Mr A. S. Danby, Government Immigration Officer, who went out to the steamer as usual for the purpose of advising them regarding their prospects. Re is of opinion that not one of them will have any difficulty in obtaining employment immediately. The assisted immigrants comprised 43 adults and 11 children, and the following were the occupations:;— Domestics 19, cooks one, farm hands three, farmers two, farm laborers 10, while four wives came out to rejoin their husbands. The domestics came under the charge of Mrs Edith Palmer, of Wellington, and will be at once placed in suitable situations throughout New Zealand. The declared capital of the assisted immigrants ranges from £ISOO down to £2. CHARCE OF MANSLAUGHTER. AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. At the inquiry into the death of John Alexander McConnell, who was killed in a motor car accident a few days ago, the jury returned a verdict finding that the driver of the motor, Rhodes Battye, Tiad by negligent driving caused the death of deceased. At the conclusion of the inquest Battye was arrested on a charge of manslaughter. CRUSHED BETWEEN TRUCKS. DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. John Cbrley, aged six years, residing with his mother at Athcl Place, was the victim of a fatal accident about 5 p.m. yesterday. He and two other boys were playing about two empty trucks in a coal yard, and Corley had his feet against one and his back against another endeavoring to shift it. The latter truck was blown back by the force of the wind, and the lad's chest was badly crushed between the buffers. He ran home, but fell down immediately he arrived there. He was removed to the hospital, but died a few minutes later."
