Th.- h.eak-up of Edendale school took plac .in Friday, 15lh inst., in the presence of a large number parents and others interested in tho welfare of the school. Mr H. E. Xiven, chairman of the committee, in opening, congratulated the headmaster (Mr A. H. Hiddleston) and his staff upon the success that had attended their efforts, during the past year. (Loud cheers.) Rev. D. Alaeleunaii also spoke in a congratulatory vein, and trusted that the children would make full us.* of their holiday vacation, and thus return reinvigoratod for tho work of the ensuing year. .Mr Xiven at a liter stage, on behalf of the pupils of Class VI., presented Air Hiddleston with a beautifully-bound volume of "The Golden Treasury." Ho wished to state on behalf of the* youthful donors that they felt deeply indebted to Mr Hiddleston for the care he hod taken with them during the past year and; they hoped that ho would continue to do as successful work (hiring the future. (Cheers.) A!r Hiddleston briefly returned thanks Every child in the school received a Christmas gift in the shape of a book, and tho following scholars in Standard VI. were awarded special prizes: General proficicnev (prizes given by Mr A. H. Hiddleston).—Esther Milne, 1 ; Francis Aiilne, 2 English (prize given by Air H. E. Xiven).—Roderick Alaclennan. Arithmetic (prizes given by Alessrs John Sawers and D. Dodds).—Peter Bnllantyno and Esther Aiilne (equal). Diligence (prize given by Airs Gray). Alexander AfcDonald. .Attendance certificates were awarded to the following:— First Class.—Alexander AfcDonald, Stanley Jackson. Archie Hall. Elirai Cameron, Jane Cameron, Isabel Hall, Olive. McDonald, Imelda Tither. Sets end Class—Wilfrid Lomion. Alfred Oberg. Proficiency certificates (seven presented, seven passed). The following aro tho names:— Esther Afilne, Norman Compten, Francis Mime, Alexander McDonald Rioderick Afaclennan, John Beck. Peter Ballartyne. MENZIES FERRY. Owing to tlie recent death of the chairman of tho committee (the late Mr W. J. Winter) there was little or no formal ceremony at tho break-up of this school. Each pupil received a book from the committee. Attendance certificates were gained as follows—First-class: Sam Clark, Edward Clark, David Smellie, Mary Gibb, Harry Gibb. Second-class: Josephine Duncan. Miss M. A. E. Campbell (mistress) | presented prizes to the most popular boy and girl, voted for by tho pupils, and they went to J ohm Walsh and Robert Shields (equal) and Mabel Shields. ' Eight pupils were proesnfcod for Standard VI., and all gained proficiency -viz., Georgo Pow. David Smellie, Samuel Wylie, John Walsh, Josephine Duncan, Mabel Shields, Tom Winter and William Wylie. The last-named two had loft school some time ago, Tom Winter in July and Wylie in October, and practically had had no coaching aince
