At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New South Wales the net profits were shown, at £222,043, making, with £62,143, a total of £284,156 available for distribution. A dividend of 10 per centum was declared, absorbing £150,000. The sum of £52,455 was added to the reserve, making £2,025,000, and £80,701 was carried forward. Four branches and four sub-branches were opened during the half-year. The president's speech stated that the note circulation had decreased by £840,000, representing notes retired and replaced by, Common wealth bank notes. The process was still going on, and altogether they would have to provide 2,200,000 Commonwealth notes at the expense of coin. Their New Zealand note circulation, representing £165,000, was untouched; but they were advised thai the New Zealand Government had introduced a Bill on similar lines to the Commonwealth Bank. However, it ■would not operate till 1913. The deposits had increased by £2,500,000 during the year. There had been increased mercantile activity as the result of good seasons and prices during the last two or three years. The whole of the Hew capital had been got in, and capital and reserves amounted to over £5,000,000. It was proposed to continue steadily increasing the reserves. The outlook for the present season was generally not unsatisfactory; but frequent disputes between employers and employees were not calculated to advance the interests of the community. The report was adopted, and a subsequent special meeting adopted an alteration in the deed of settlement.
