PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr Alien Wallace, Si.A., of Auckland University College, has been selected as the Auckland'candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship for 1912. Miss Marchant, lady principal of the Otago Girls' High School, has forwarded her resignation to the Hig:h Schools Board of Governors, the resignation to take effect as from the end- of the year. Mr A. Gordon Maedonald, A.0.5.M., a recruit graduate of the Otago School of Mines, has been appointed Government inspector of Mines in the Malay Peninsula. The appointment is an important ;;ud lucrative one. A London cable announces the death of Lady Colin Campbell, who became a widow in 1895. Lady Campbell was educated in France and Italy and was the author of many charming little books among which may be mentioned "A Miracle in Rabbits," "Darell Blake" and "A Book of the Running Brook." She also contributed largely to the columns of 'The World,' of which paper she was art critic. Prior to leaving Clinton for Invorcargill, where Mr Robb has been appointed railway ticket inspector, Mr and Mrs Robb were given a hearty farewell in the Coronation Hall and Mrs Robb was presented by Mr P. M. Murray on behalf of those present with a handsome tea urn, suitably inscril>ed. The evening was spent pleasantly in social chat and music, the following contributing items towards the evening's enjoyment: —Overture, Mrs A. Castle; songs, Mrs A. Castle and Mrs Garden, Miss R. King and Miss Saunders and Messrs Lyons, McKenzie, Storrie and Murray. Mr Beattie presided.

The death is announced of Mr Joseph Stock, an old and well-known resident of Invercargill. The late Mr Stock arrived at Dunedin in 1861 from Victoria and took part in the Gabriel's Gully rush in that year. He subsequently carried on business at Invercargill and at the time of Ids death was engaged in commission, insurance and shipping work. The deceased was thrice married. His first wife died in 1879, the .second in 1882, and the third in 1906. He leaves one son and four daughters. In the early days of (iore the late Mr Stock owned the block of land! on which the Bank of Australasia and the- }iew Zealand Express Company's buildings are erected. A very pleasant evening was spent at the Criterion Hotel by the boarders and members of the staff on Wednesday evening. The gathering was for the purpose of bidding good-bye to one of the staff in view of her approaching marriage to a l>oarder who is leaving the district. A couple of hours were spent in dancing and song and after supper Mr Joyce, on behalf of Mrs Joyce and members of the hotel staff, asked Miss McKenzie's acceptance of a handsome silver tea ami coffee service as a token ot esteem and goodwill. Mr Joyce referred to Miss Mckenzie's many good qualities in eulogistic terms, and wished her much happiness in her married life. He «ls:> presented Mr Arthur Gregory with a marble clock and expressed the hope that he would be successful in business in the district to which he was go ; *ig. Mr R. Stephens, on behalf of Miss McKenzie, and Mr Gregory suitably replied thanking the donors, for their gifts and the kindly sentiments expressed.
