PLAY THE GAME.
TO THE EDITOE. Sir, —The reception which the Mataura football team on returning from Wyndham met with at the railway station on Wednesday evening must have been galling in the extreme, not only to the team, but to any member of the community with the slightest sporting feeling. To "kick a man when he is down"' is regarded' as the essence of l'owness; to hoot a team of young footballers because a match has been lost must be placed under the same • category. A more unseemly and indiscreet exhibition of bad feeling and worse manners has fortunately never before been witnessed in Mataura; and the ignorant person who started the unsportsmanlike hooting ' surely cannot help blushing for shame when he reads this too mild rebuke for his bad form. The sportsmen amongst us, comprising both players and spectators, who derive a wholesome pleasure from taking part in the game or witnessing it join in saying "Well played, lads, you'll win next time.".—l am, etc., C. M. INGLIS, Hon. Secretary Mataura F.C.
