CHINESE AND OPIUM.
. $ PEE UNITED PKF.SS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, May 21. A deputation representing the AntiOpium League waited on the Hon. G. Fowlds to-day to protest against the sale of* opium by chemists to Chinese in the form of tincture. The Rev.' J. J. North said that the Chinese by a simple process converted the tincture into substance fit for smoking, and it was used by 25 per cent, of the Chinese population. It was hoped that legislation would be introduced to prevent such a contravention of the purposes of the Act. The Minister said he recognised the position and sympathised with the deputation. He. stated that legislation would be difficult in order to prevent the undue harassing of the chemists in tho legitimate use of opium in the form of cough mixtures, pills, etc. The Department would do its best to suggest registration provided no honest chemist was impeded in the pursuit of legitimate business.
