♦ In a paper read recently before (he (•ivil and Mechanical Soehy .Air .). S. Owens dealt with storms and their effect on the sea coast. He said it was surprising to notice the power ol' the wind to move even stone.* in ex(>osed positions. Sir A. Geikie recorded instances oi pieces of flagstone weighing .several pounds beiu.e detached from the cliffs during gales in the Orkneys and .SJietlunds and carried upwards and scattered over- the moor above. The author could recollect a case where men in trimming a chalk cliff to an even hatter v.evc working during a heavy wind wh'oh blew straight against tin- faro o! tincliff; the latter was ahout *0 feet hi«h, and tho chalk detached hv the crowbars of the men, unless when in larLf masses, failed to reach the beneatli, being carried back by tin: wind and spread over the top of the cliff.
