Mr Daniel Sheody, tho oldest resident jf Greymoufh, who had been a member if tho Borough Council, the hospital trustees, and other local bodies, died yesterday morning. Mr Ashley Duncan, an old Wailaki High School boy (formerly of Gore), and son of Mr Duncan, stationmaster at Oamaru, has boon informed that ho !ias passed the first section of his LL.B. degree. Mr Michael Morfatt, one of the oldest identities of tho Yvaiknia district, died last evening. Deceased, who had been mlfering from heart trouble for some time, was about 70 years of ago. Mr Thos. Mac Gibbon, acting-chair-man of the Southland Education Board, leaves on Friday, in company with his son-in-law (Mr J. Penny, of the Bank of Now Zealand, Mataura), on n visit to Sydney. Tho Rev. Father O'Donnell, who has been parish priest at Gore for tho Bust fifteen years, purpose* leaving on a holiday trip to the Old Country about !he middle of next month.
A presentation took place in the Mataura public school during recess on Friday afternoon (writes our correspondent). The teachers with the children of the lower divisions met in the large- schoolroom to bid farewell to Miss fryde, who i.s leaving the school. Mr .Uacandrew, the headmaster, remarked that during the four years spent by .Miss I'ryde. in the capacity of pupil teacher she had gone through most, of the work of the. school, and she was now a qualified mistress. Miss Pryde aad been successful in her examinations, and it was expected ilu.t she would reach a leading place in the teaching profession. They felt that they could not allow Miss Prclye to go iway to her position as mistress at Ural Bush without- taking with her -nine memento from the. children and ;lnff of the. Mat aura school. He then presented the departing teacher with i travelling rug which had been purchased with the olEeriugs contributed by the children, supplemented by those jf the teachers, ilr Evisou, assistant master, suitably replied on Mis* T'ryde.'s behalf.
