GORE DOMAIN BOARDS.
NOMINATIONS BY THE BOKOUGH COUNCIL. At last night's meeting of the Gore Borough Council a communication was received from Mr McNab, M.H.R., who Btated that Mr J. B. Paterson had b. en suggested to the Government as a suitable person for appointment to the Gore Domain Board, and be had been asked if he concurred. Holding as he did the opinion that the Council should administer the reseves, he asked the Council if it concurred in the proposed appointment. Councillor Day said three years ago the Council, after a hard fight, had secured the right to nominate members to the Board. Since then matters had drifted back to the old system, and now the Board was nominatk ing members itself. He had nothing whutagainst the gentleman nominated I by the Board, but he tboueht that the power should be relegated to the Council. The fault he saw with the Council's nominating members was that they could not appoint them to Hold office on the Board only during the term they served as Councillors! When the Council's nominees went out of office as Councillors they should retire from the Board. He moved that Councillor Poppelwell be recommended to the Government through Mr McNab for appointment to the Board.—Councillor Simpson seconded pro forma. Councillor Mac Gibbon said the best way would be tc enter a protest against any other appointment being made to the Board, and allow the whole concern to be handed over to the control of the Council. Councillor Poppelwell said his opinion was that the Council should control the reserves. In the meantime the Council should secure us much representation on the Board as possible in view of legislation vesting the reserves in the Borough being introduced into Parliament. If appointed to the Board ho would undertake to resign when he retired from the Council. Councillor Mac Gibbon thought tbey should impress upon Mr McNab that the Council was unanimous in affirming that the reserves Bhould be controlled by the Borough, and therefore it was desirabio to appoint Councillors to the Board. The motion was put and carried tunanimously. . Councillor Simpson pointed out that the vacancy on the East Gore Domain Board, caused by the resignation of the Kev. J. A. Asher had never been filled, and it was resolved to recommend the Government to appoint Councillor J. Speden.
