The Ensign. GORE: TUESDAY, JULY 23.

At the Dunedin Police Court on Saturday George Francis Robinson, Government engi. neer, was charged with the manslaughter of three men killed at Duuback limekiln by a fall of earth. A remand till Wednesday next to Palmerston was granted, and bail was immediately forthcoming. A jealous young man named Beal shot and seriously iLJured a barmaid at Her Majesty's (Sydney) Theatre on Saturday night, and slightly wounded enother barmaid. At the Gore Warden's Court yesterday, before Mr S. E. McCarthy, the application of John Thompson (Mr Kichol) to surrender a special claim on the Matauia river was granted.

An adjourned meeting in connection with } J the proposal to establish a dairy factory at ■ Tulurau was held in the schoolhouse on Wednesday, when Messes Sawers, J. McLauchlan (Wyndham), and McCall (Seaward Downs) addressed the meeting, and gave general information as to the starting of a factory. The following gentlemen were then appointed provisional directors :—Messrs Jas. Gait, W. Muir, W. Henderson, M. O'Rourke, D. Wards, and W. J. Williams. At a subsequent meeting of directors, Mr Jas. Gait was appointed chairman, and Mr W. J. Williams secretary. jr The ordinary meeting of the Pukerau Mutual Improvement Society was held on Thursday evening, there beiDga small attendance. The president occupied the chair. Mr Norton's motion, " that in future the meetings start at 8.30 p.m," notice of which had been given at a previous meeting, was put and carried. The business of the evening was short essays by members, the first being an excellent paper by Mrs Mail on " Home Life —its possibilities." In it the writer showed how much influence for good or evil in after life the home training had on the young, and regretted that more attention was not paid to the interval between childhood and the time when children leave the parental roof to face the world and fight the battle of life. The second essay was by Mr MoLeod, the subjeot being " Habits." Splendid advice was given in the almost unassailable paper as to what habits all shoud cultivate for their betterment and success in life. Both essays were freely criticised by all present.
