MATAIRA ATHLETIC SOCIETY.

' ■?& SIXTH-kNNOAL GAMES. : ■>■ . -Th^Matau^jA.tWetio.Sooiety 'was: favored-, with splendid:rweatlier;.;yeßtorday -for - the annual games; . Tie popularity of -the gathering was evidenced by the large number at. ■patrons present, the attendance yesterday numbering fully , whioh constitutes a* record for .the Sooiety. r. Over :£45 was' taken at the gates, and this, "with a large, itferense in the .number of competitors, should enable the Society to make ft handsome profit on the 1900 gathering. This year the Society wjsely reduced the piize money of the Sheffield Handicap, and increased the value, of "nearly, all other events on tho' programme, this being the means of securing first-rate .competition. Everything was done to make the day an enjoyable one from a publio point of view, and iritbisthe-Spoioty was 'entirely successful,, ps the various events were all keenly contorted, and produced close finishes. The principal sve'nt of -the day — the Sheffield' Handicap —was won~ rather easily by Bennett, of Duneiiin, who also won the, -220 yds ■ handicap. The district and maiden races produced large fields, as also did the 440 yds handicap, the 220 yds hurdles, and half-mile. The mile race was won by Tv Carroll, who, starting from scratch, ran the -distance in the higb'ly creditable time of 4min '41 l-sth"" sec. The various wrestling and weight-putting classes were evenly contested, J. Hoffman scoring most points here, winning the heavy-weight wresting, throwing the hammer, and putting stone. The various jumping events produced record entries, and excellent performances. -Taken nil through thegames were the most successful yet held at Mataura, and while the Socie'y continues tooarryout the sports on the same lines, there is nothing to fear from lack of public support. One unpleasant circumstance arose during the day, this being the running of Robinson irr the qaarter-roUe. The stewards were not satisfied with this athletes performance, and called him tip and cautioned him A. pony weight-guessing qompetjtion . was a new feature on the programme, and judging by the large number who paid . one shilling for the privilege of guessing the pony's weight there should be a handsome balance to the Society's credit. H. Driny was adjudged winner of the event, he having guessed the exact weight of the animal — 6831b5. A. word .of praise is due to the Mataura Brass Band, under conductor Henry, for its playing, whioh did a lot to make the day so enjoyable. Mr W. J. Irwin had charge of the refreshment booth, and gave satisfaction to all. The officers as a whole worked splendidly, but special praise is due to Messrs Qrierson and Milne for supervising the sports, and to the secretary (Mr E. J. Cameron), who carried out his onerous duties in a satisfactory manner. Mr W. Gardiner again filled the post of starter, and Mr T. Ambrose acted as handicap, and both these gentlemen proved equal to the' tasks allotted them.
