SOUTHLAND METROPOLITAN SHOW.
V FIRST DAY. - .The -thirty-fourth annua) show, was commenced on Tuesday-Sunder : most favarable auspices, -the weather . being perfect, the attendance for the first day good," and " entries showing an increase of about 100 on last year's total. The. sheep and cattle classes - only were judged, and there was tive display ih both these important divisions. -•.-;•'■ -■--.*• In Linooln sheep Messrs Geo. and J. B. Sutton took all the prizes, showing, as usual, - some splendid representatives .of this breed. In Border Leicesters Mr McCrostie and Me isrs McKercher Bros, were to' the fore, and in English Leicesters Mr A. Murdoch made a clean sweep. Mr Jas. Gardner was the most successful exhibitor in the Romney Marsh class, securing both the champi- h hip's, while Messrs Jas. Holms, Wm. Johnston and the Hon. M. Holmes were also successful in their division. Mr J. S. Grieve had things all his own way in Shropshire Downs, and the Hon. M. Helnies and Messrs Helder ■ and Awdry divided the honors in Cheviots. Mr Jas. Blaikie was most successful with fat sheep, and Messrs E. . Taylor and Co. with fat lambs. There was a good representation of Shortborn cattle, tbe most successful exhibitors being Messrs Beaven, T. and J. S. Carswell, and W. Waddell. Messrs W. Rankin and D. McCallum shared the honors in Ayrshires, some splendid beasts being forward. Messrs James Holms and R.. Cleave secured all the tickets for Herefords, Messrs R. and A. Officer and the Hon. Mr Holmes shared the Polled Augus classes, Mr Jas. Crombie'Was to the fore with crossbreds, and Mr D,_ Murray's exhibits-of fat stock were most meritorious. The usual fine display of implements was made by the different manufacturers and agents. SECOND DAY. Perfect weather again favored the Society yesterday, and as a consequence the attendance was exceptionally large, the number of people present being estimated at 9000. There wus a splendid display of horses in all departments, and especially so in draughts. Mr Geo. Holland's stallion Tasman repeated his Gore performance aud gained first and champion. Mr R. Charters' splendid mare was awarded first and champion, Mr J. Waddell securing third in three-ycar-bld fillies. Mr J. Deverey's Battlefield gained first and champion for aged thoroughbred stallions. Mr Donald Macdonald secured third for list hack, second for roadster up to 14st, second for cob, first for troop horse, first and second for light harness horse, -first for pair of buggy horses, and second for harness horse under 15 hands, Mr F. Wallis gaining third in the last-named division. Hill and Agnew were placed first for pony under 14 hands and Mr T. O'Connor second. Master P. Faris gained first for 12 hands pony. Mr T. Mortimer was first for carriage stallion and trotting stallion. Mr S. G. Inder tied with Mr D. MoPherson for first place with the best leaping horse, the former being placed third in the hurdle competition. Mr T. O'Connor was first for driving. There was a fine show of pig-s, in which class Messrs R. M. Dickson and Jas. Humphries figured prominently as prize-takers. A splendid display of dairy produce was made in all departments. The Stirling Dairy Factoiy gained first and seconds for. old and new cheese, Waikawa factory hon.cer. in the latter division.
