TAPANUI. The contest for Mayor passed off very quietly on Wednesday last, very little interest being taken. There wore two candidates — Mr J. B. McAlister, an ex- -"" Mayor, and Mr W. Sinclair, who has held the office for the last three or four years. Mr Sinclair was-returned with a majority of seven votes. A Temperance sermon was preached on Sunday morning by the Rev. A. Begg, in the Presbyterian Church, and in the evening he gave a semi-political one. In the evening in the "Wesleyan Church a Temperance sermon was also preached by the Eev. Mr Wilson. The Prohibitionists are working hard to hold the ground they have gained, and their opponents are doing likewise to re- ' gain that which they have lost. We will soon know which side will win. Mr Thomson addresses the electors tonight (Monday), and as he is the last of : the candidates to speak, the people will • - then be able to make up their minds i who to vote for. j We are having splendid weather just . now, and shearing is in full swing all , round the district.
