HOKONUI.

A new hall, which has been built by, and at the expense of, the mineiß, was opened on Friday ni^ht, 17th inst, at the Hokonui Coal Company's mine, when the Black Diamond Minstrels gave one of their usual interesting entertainments. Previous to commencing the entertainment, Mr J. Kebyon, sea., made a few appropriate remarks with reference to the building of the ball, and also some referring to the miners. He (Mr Kenyon) suid that he had been connected with mining and miners for about thirty yeors, and he had never met such a steady lot of mea as were at work at that mine. With reference to tbe entertainment, each member did his or her part in a most creditable manner. After the usual songs and jokes had been disposed of creditably, tbe whole was brought to a close by tbe troupd playing the farce, " Thumbs Up," the same causing a great deal of amusement. The usual dance followed, at which a great number took pait. The music end refresh* ment« were all that could be desired. One matter the committee of management would do well to keep in mind is to start the dance a trifle earlier on any future eccasion. A very heavy rain set in here on Saturday night, 25th inst., the rivers bein? in flood on Sunday morning. Poor bunny had a lively time of it on Sunday and Monday. At 4 o'clock on Monday morning, one of the miners (Mr C. Ramsay) at the Company's mine, bad rather an unpleasant experience. He found the water coming into bis house, co that ha had to remove his wife and family to a place of safety. It was thought at one time of the day that the house would have been taken off the piles, but fortunately such was not the case. The Government have started the forma, tion of another section of the Hokonui railway line, thera being several of the unemployed working there. It is said the Government intend taking the line as far McDonald's corner, Bedgehope, Ifsnohis the case, it will be a great boon to the settlers. : May 28. (
